Holding
The Court recognised the right of transgender persons to self-identify their gender as male, female, or "third gender", held that non-recognition of gender identity violates Articles 14, 15, 16, 19 and 21, and directed the Centre and States to treat transgender persons as a socially and educationally backward class entitled to reservation in education and public employment.
